So my name is Kundo. I'm 21 years old and I'm from Sheffield and I make Christian music, gospel music.

Amazing. So first question I have for you is was there ever a moment where you felt clearly led to make music?

SPEAKER_01 1:10

Clearly led, I would say potentially to have secondary school, but when I was like, okay, I need to finally actually take the actions and steps was in university, so around first or second year of university. I always knew I was gonna do music from young, but it was like, okay, when how am I gonna do it? How am I gonna, you know, take the steps in doing it, make sure it's effective and proper, and not just, yeah. But clearly lead was most definitely inside first year of uni, first second year of that as well.

Alright. So, how do you see your music as a ministry that impacts others?

SPEAKER_01 1:48

So, with my music, I'd say that how it impacts others is that it's raw, it's honest, and as a ministry, it's very much for Christians and those that haven't been Christians that want to walk that want to explore their faith and in terms of walking with Christ. Because to be a Christian, it is a personal relationship with God. And honestly, when I'm writing my music and when I'm taking the time to consecrate to read the word and to apply them to the songs, I also make sure I do most definitely include my own personal stories inside there as well, and my own personal what's the word, testimony inside there, as best as I possibly can. So those that feel the type of way in any circumstances, you can go to my songs and you'll be like, oh okay, this song's can relate to this, especially any type of feeling or any type of circumstance you're inside. So that's my ministry, I would say, inside my music. Yeah.

I see. And my last introduction question is if you had an unlimited amount of money, right? And your bills are paid, family's sorted, wife is sorted, however it is, uh-huh, what would you do with the rest of your money? Or that with the sum of your money?

So, with the money, what I would like to do is so, first of all, I would like to elevate the music because I feel like the better the quality, the more it can go around and spread. So, my aim as well is I want to be a composer as well, okay, and be able to like have like a hall that I can be able to have, I don't know, about what 50 people playing the violins, about 50 people playing, I don't know, the saxophone or something like that. But it would be music that I'd all orchestrate so it can all glorify God. But apart from that, as well, at the same location, I would like to do like a community centre as well, so this is where people can come to listen to music, come and also speak and talk to people, and it's just essentially a way for them to come all together, and because obviously it would be a Christian led, when they're now coming inside to a place that is also another side from home, they're also gonna get a get the word as well. So it's the best of both worlds, essentially.

To me, Jesus is comforter, he's a guide, he's a friend as well, he's a father, he is literally everything to me. Everything rolled in one. And yeah, that's who Jesus says to me, to be fair, can't lie.

Oh, bless you. So I want to ask you, is there a particular scripture that encouraged you through your journey as an artist?

SPEAKER_01 8:32

I would as an artist, I I would say I do find myself going a lot back to it's between Psalms 23 but also Hebrews 11. Because as you can tell in my music is very faith-led.

But then it's also very much about trials and tribulations and essentially when you're by up feeling like you're by yourself sometimes, right? And you know, who else you need except from Jesus, right? So, and I feel that's how a lot of people do feel, but obviously I'm talking about myself personally, but you know, yeah, I feel like them two scriptures in particular was a very good, uh, very good guideline and also helped me and from our journeys of artists, to be fair. So, yeah.

Okay, speaking about music, what artists or genre influenced your sound growing up?

SPEAKER_01 9:26

Growing up, I would say, you see, you know, you know what's so funny about this, yeah, is that at home, like we have a C we have a CD player at home, but every time my dad would put um songs into the car, right? Okay, but I would never know the actual specific names of the artists, right? Okay, because I'm Congolese by the way, right? And so growing up, like I'd see like the names of like the artists, it might be like, for example, I don't know, like they'd be on the on the name, right? But it's like okay, cool. But then I'd also see um songs from Zambia as well, from different countries. So, but you know the obvious ones the Don the Don Moen and whatnot, you get me. But even there separately as well, I'd say Jay Huss kind of inspired me as well.

So, like, yeah, but I think that's because of the growing up in England and whatnot. I just like, yeah. Oh, yeah, the culture.

I wonder if I was over to genre because I know I'm singing and then I know I'm rapping inside the song and it's live, but I'm also like, I don't know, you know what I mean? Yeah, but just know my heart and soul is inside of the song. Of course, every time.

Remember we were talking about you were like how it kind of has that kind of Spanish-ish kind of sound to it, but it's like Afrobeat inside there as well, there's a whole bunch of different stuff in there, exactly, and I think very representative of you know being from England, isn't it?

I was literally when I was coming down, yeah. I was listening to my uh discography and even songs that haven't even released yet. And it's like, I don't know yet. I don't know. But one thing I do know is it will always lead back to my first song, which is With You.

It's like and it's like the lyrical content inside there, it's like literally like God is with you for life. Get it, and it's whatever situation or whatever circumstance you find yourself in, rich, poor, you're right, or whatnot, happy, sad, angry. At the end of it, when it all comes down to it, who you're gonna go back to? God. And who where is he when all this is happening? He's right there beside you.

Um I say, go on. So, how do you say that you express yourself through your music?

SPEAKER_01 13:16

So, as I said before, with the music or expressing myself in general is obviously through the music, because I'm not very much uh, I don't know, like an open in person like that. But with inside the music that I do like to make and write inside of it, as I said, I like to put my own kind of personal stories inside there, or personal feelings in there as well. Okay, that I've um seen or experienced. For example, with the stay my my song Um Stay Carl May inside there, um there's a line inside there, Mama said careful what you wish for. Do you not know how much she has in store? You get it? That song there in particular was funny enough because I remember it's a time when I was coming outside of primary school and my mum came to pick me up. And then near the Asda or whatnot, or near a shop, right? There was like, if I'm correct, a Maserati. Now I like cars, but then I was like, Oh, I wish I had that, I wish I could have that car now, innit? You get me? And I don't know if like for yourself, but obviously growing up, like obviously with Africa, isn't it? You know, like when it's like you want something and you say it, and I don't know if your parents ever said to you, like, oh, like you don't know how they got that, like, be careful. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, yeah. And it's like you don't know how people get the things that they get, they're getting it, you get it. Well, obviously, I'm almost saying it because she's not like, oh, like, you know, she's always have nice things, but it's like, you know, it's it's that teaching of, you know what I'm saying, patience, obviously, like in this young stay calme, and obviously, you know, like doing things, I guess, you know, the right way, innit? You get me? So that's that's kind of how I like to put my own spin inside of it. It also relates to some people. I remember my um camera guy when he heard the song, he was like, Oh, for stay calm me. It reminded him when he was growing up and he had an older cousin and he wanted to have his clothes, but then obviously it's like you know when you steal your older siblings' clothes, like, oh, what that, I want that. I've done that, but I'm I attest to it. You get me, I'm a criminal for it. But it's like, you know, stay calm me, it's gonna come to you, time's gonna come.

So I like to put it into little things like that as well. So yeah, the Romans 8.28. I'm that life.

Interesting. Interesting. Um, okay. So I mean, from what I've been like told and from what I've seen, it seems like the music industry can be kind of challenging at times. Have you do you feel like you've ever experienced a challenging moment in the music industry?

SPEAKER_01 15:35

In terms of a challenging moment, maybe not quite yet, for because everyone that I've kind of spoken to has been very welcoming. Oh, okay, and offered an opportunity, in particular, Marcus from Rising Talents. I want to say thank you to him. But in terms of a challenging experience, and then also to like London RB and whatnot, other events that have shouted me out to come to perform. But I think in terms of a difficult moment, I wouldn't have a specific moment, but I guess it's just for myself. It's like I'm hungry, I want to go out there and perform more. You know what I'm saying? It's like I want to go out there, perform more, I want to go out more there and spread the word as well. So I guess that's what's challenging for myself. Because it's like the balance of like being competitive but also being patient. Yeah, so yeah, I have to remind myself to what? To stay coming. Yeah, stay coming.

I mean, okay, so like in while making music, how long have you been making music for?

SPEAKER_01 16:37

So I officially went to the studio, if I'm correct, was in like 2024. About two years ago, roughly about two years ago. But in terms of music, but that's like actually going to the studio, but in terms of music in general, though, that's like since I don't know, since I came out of being pretty much like literally like music with the family, playing the drums, the keys and whatnot, and it's like having that environment to listen to everybody just sit making songs together and singing together inside the house, it just allowed me to also okay, grab bits and bits and that and whatnot. That's what's helped me also make my own music. So literally like that. But yeah, officially worked on the music in 2024.

Okay, yeah. So, what would you say you've learned on this journey in music so far?

SPEAKER_01 17:23

Honestly, I've learned it's really tested my um my faith, and in terms of also, so I went to a Bible study um this Wednesday, okay, and the pastor asked the question, he was like, Why do people feel embarrassed to like you know when they're evangelizing on that on the streets? Why do people feel embarrassed for whatnot? Like preaching or like going out into the word and into the public, yeah. And then in my own head, what I was thinking about was like, oh, how far they're willing to go for Jesus, yeah, and that's what it links with my faith, and it's like when I'm doing the songs and music and whatnot, and I'm just I guess I'm spreading the word, and um, you know, Matthew 28, it's really much, yeah, testing my faith, but how how much am I willing to go for Christ? Yeah, and it's beautiful because I'm very much someone, if you know me, I'm very competitive and very much like don't like to give up. So it's really testing, okay, like how much am I willing to go for? Yeah, and if you see my one of my songs, it'll be like called Till My Last Breath. So literally, till my last breath is how long I wait to go. Yeah.

Okay, so I mean, we can't really put like we always say, we can't really put a genre on your music. But what would you say that the biggest misconceptions that people have about Christian music as a whole?

SPEAKER_01 18:49

I think, and then funny enough, because with music, music has timelines in terms of it changes throughout different periods of time. I think with Christian music, for example, you're seeing now Christian drill, you're seeing Christian rap, you're seeing Christian RB. Obviously, the traditional would be, you know, gospel.

If that's wow, yeah, usually it's gospel hymns, things like that.

The hymns and whatnot, you get me. So I think it's the misconception is okay, like I'm hearing the rap from the outside, like the world of music, but then I'm hearing like rap inside Christian music. It's like, how do the two even align? Yeah, but I think it's I think um very much differently. Obviously, I'm a musician. It's like we have the God-given ability, the ER, and God gave us music to adore him and to praise him and whatnot. So it's like whatever we're saying within the lyrics to us praising God, praising the things around um God. It's very much okay. Maybe you just don't like hearing rap. Doesn't mean we're not talking about God or whatnot. You know what I'm trying to say? And because music is very subjective, it's very much okay if you're own, right? And sometimes I don't like listening to But if you're you know you're talking about Christ and whatnot, and you are further in the ministry, then how um I how can I be opposed to it, right? Yeah, maybe that's just not for me. So that's what I say as a misconception. People thinking, okay, I'm hearing Christian rap. Like, what's going on here? Christians should not be rapping, da da da. But it's an art, it's an art form.

You know, I hear that, you know, because I've I've heard many people talk about Christian rap music specifically, yeah, and say that you know, for example, Christians shouldn't be doing drill music and grime and whatnot. I mean, I just I don't know personally, this is my opinion, or don't come and shoot me. I mean, I personally think that as long as you're speaking about God, as long as you're trying you're spreading the gospel, you're basically evangelizing.

So it's like I don't see what the problem is. I just don't get me wrong, yeah. You might not want to listen to I don't know, Christian rap or grime music when you're worshipping. Yeah, exactly. Maybe that's not your your thing, and that's fine, no one's gonna do it. Exactly. Um, for example, like me, when in the morning when I'm driving to work, yeah, I only listen to worship music. So like the singing and hymns and the proper gospel and everything. Because obviously, I'm I use music as a tool to connect with God. God, yes, exactly. So yeah, so obviously, I love my my my rap music. I'm gonna lie, as you guys know from my weekly videos, I love my rap music, chia.

Um, and yes, it's like I don't know, I still feel the same kind of connection. I feel like me because I'm like hiking empath, guys, I connect a lot with people's emotions, should I say? Yeah, so I feel like a lot of the time when Christian music artists are like speaking on the on the music that they're they're speaking on, obviously, the music. The music that I'm making, okay? They they talk a lot about their emotions and how this emotional journey led them to God, exactly, and how God has transformed them. Like a big example is that of That is I so soft. Like, I'm not gonna lie, music is amazing, and even you as well, to be fair, guys. You know, we're talking about him to be fair. I mean, there's so many, there's so many artists that just talk about their journey before Christ, journey with Christ, and obviously present present moments and whatnot.

Yeah, it's it's I think being able to see that transformation or hear about it at least, and maybe being able to resonate with it helps.

I believe it helps, you know.
